How to delete Instagram DMs in bulk

Instagram lets you delete one conversation at a time, through the three-dot menu on each chat. There is no button to clear your inbox. Here is exactly what deleting a DM does, how to do it by hand, and how to remove all of them in bulk without handing anyone your login.

The short answer

On Instagram you delete a DM conversation one at a time: open the chat's three-dot menu and choose Delete. That removes the chat from your inbox only, the other person keeps their copy. There is no bulk option. To clear a full inbox, a browser extension can step through your chats and delete them the same way, at a safe pace, inside the tab you are already signed into. Deletion is permanent on your side.

What deleting an Instagram DM actually does

Two different things live behind the word delete, and it matters which one you want.

Delete (a conversation): removes the whole chat from your inbox. Only yours. The other person still sees the conversation on their side, unchanged. This is what the three-dot menu on a chat offers, and it is what clears your inbox.

Unsend (a single message): removes one message you sent, for everyone in the chat. It only works on your own messages, one at a time, and the other person may see a notice that something was unsent.

If your goal is a clean, private inbox, you want Delete. If you need one specific message gone from the other side too, that is Unsend, and no tool can do it for the other person's messages.

How to delete a DM by hand

  1. Open your inbox. On the web, go to instagram.com/direct/inbox. In the app, tap the messages icon.
  2. Find the chat.Hover it on the web, or long-press it in the app.
  3. Open the three-dot menu.It appears to the right of the conversation.
  4. Choose Delete, the last option.Confirm. The chat leaves your inbox.
There is no select-all and no multi-select for conversations. For a handful of chats, this is fine. For a full inbox, it is the whole afternoon.

How to delete all your Instagram DMs at once

Since Instagram has no bulk delete, the only way to clear an inbox in one go is a tool that repeats the manual steps for you. The wyper.io Social Cleanup extension has a Direct messages mode that does exactly that: it goes through your inbox, opens each chat's three-dot menu, chooses Delete and confirms, then moves to the next one.

It works inside the Instagram tab you are already signed into. There is no password to type, no OAuth screen and no token, and nothing from your chats is sent anywhere. It also paces itself, so Instagram sees steady human-speed activity rather than a burst that triggers an action block.

Will deleting DMs in bulk get my account blocked

It can if it happens too fast. Instagram responds to bursts of the same action with a temporary action block, usually a few hours to a day. The trigger is speed, not the number of chats, so the fix is pacing. A good tool spreads the deletions out and pauses regularly; by hand, simply take breaks between batches.

Questions

How do I delete all my Instagram DMs at once?
Instagram itself has no bulk option: you delete conversations one at a time from each chat's three-dot menu. To clear a whole inbox, a browser extension like wyper Social Cleanup steps through your chats and deletes them the same way, automatically and at a safe pace, in the tab you are already signed into.
Does deleting an Instagram DM delete it for the other person too?
No. Deleting a conversation removes it from your inbox only; the other person keeps their copy. To remove a single message from both sides, use Unsend on that message, which only works for messages you sent yourself.
How do I delete Instagram DMs on my phone?
In the app, long-press a conversation in your inbox, then choose Delete and confirm. It is the same one-at-a-time process as on the web. For clearing many chats, the browser extension on a computer is the practical route, since the app offers no bulk delete.
Is it safe to bulk delete Instagram messages?
The wyper extension runs entirely inside your own logged-in tab and never asks for your password or an OAuth token, and it paces the deletions so Instagram does not see a suspicious burst. The honest caveats: automating account actions is not an official Instagram feature, so it is at your own account risk, and deletion is permanent on your side.
Can I recover a deleted Instagram DM?
Not from Instagram. Once you delete a conversation it is gone from your inbox and cannot be restored there. The other person still has their copy, and messages you never deleted stay. If you might need a chat later, screenshot or export it before deleting.
